We all know that almonds are a healthy nut with high nutrient density. Consumption of this delicious nut has been shown to mitigate oxidative stress, inflammation and other negative effects of physical stress. We recently found a study which aimed to examine the effect of almonds on elements of endurance exercise performance in trained athletes.
Scientists conducted a 10-week, placebo-controlled study. Eight trained male cyclists and two triathletes were put to the test during this period. The athletes consumed a controlled amount of almonds for 4 weeks and an alternate energy food (isocaloric cookies) for another 4 weeks.
The cyclists underwent 3 performance tests including a 125min steady exercise and 20min time trial on an indoor stationary trainer. This test was conducted at the start of the study and at the end of each intervention phase.
Blood was collected in the morning prior to the performance test for biochemical measurements. Finger blood was taken during the test for glucose determination. Carbohydrate and fat oxidation, energy expenditure, and oxygen use were calculated using respiratory gas analysis.
The results suggest that almonds can be incorporated into diets of those who undertake exercise training for performance improvement
Whole almonds were found to improve cycling distance and the elements related to endurance performance more than isocaloric cookies in trained athletes. The scientists concluded that some nutrients in almonds may contribute to carbohydrate reservation and utilization as well as effective oxygen utilization.
These results suggest that almonds can be incorporated into your diet for performance improvement.
The Banana Chia bar, with 12g of almonds in each bar, is the perfect way to increase your almond intake in a great tasting bar. It’s compact, lightweight and easy to carry on your run or ride.
